Our CEO, Mr. Over-use Authority
Well, as happens at the end of the year in many Korean companies, we had our executive rotation. Included in that, our CEO changed. The new CEO's name is only two characters. Of course they are based on Chinese characters which mean something else, but they also make up a somewhat common Korean word: misuse, as in to abuse or misuse authority, or overstep one's authority. Well, I saw a document being e-mailed around the Audit department, and they commented on this. Having apparently received a tip from someone who knows the new CEO, they said not to use that Korean word, but instead use a different one which is similar: misuse, as in use for the wrong purposes. As an auditor, that would be annoying: imagine you are trying to explain that one of the CFOs in an overseas office was overstepping his bounds of authority by approving documents only the president of that office could approve? Then what? Misuse of power, and overstepping authority are different in that context. But what can you do if it makes the CEO mad when you use his name that way? This is welcome news to me, because regardless of how much I overstep my authority, it won't be reported that way. I guess I can start approving all my business trip expenses myself now...
