Summer 2006 Floods
These are some pictures I took during the flooding in Seoul this past summer. I know this bad and worse flooding has occured before, but this was the first time for me to see it first hand. I'm glad I didn't build my house here...
You can tell the water is at least 9 or so feet higher than normal, that is if the Korean kids who play ball here are playing on a standard height rim. Not sure if it is. Haven't tried grabbing the rim. I can't grab 10 feet, but I can grab a lot in Korea, so they must have a lot of non-standard rims. Or have I gotten taller?...
I suppose if I were facing the prospect of a flood, I would probably want to tie down my outhouse too. But this does raise the question of whether or not the water flooded the storage container for said outhouse? Hmm... I'm just glad my water is pumped upstream in the Han River from where the Anyang-Ceon (안양천) feeds in. Not that similar outhouses don't probably exist upstream too. Next time I will have to play a prank and cut the rope... You can also see at the veryleft side, middle of the picture, there is a roof just showing. THis is the rof of a pavillion on a soccer field. So that means the water is pretty high...
And whoever said Yeouido (여의도) wasn't a ture island? I have proof right here! Well, it did take some flooding, but... Note the street sign at the right, middle side of the picture. That is one of the Olympic Roadways. Hmm... Must have shut that down.
What a shame! All that pretty park, under water! Where did all the snack shops go? Thought I would see those floating away! Come to find out, they saw it coming and towed them all up to higher ground. Guess this has happened before...
